Gluggafoss (Merkjárfoss):
Þórsmerkurvegur, Southern Region, Iceland, 2024
Consisting of three falls (an upper, middle, and lower falls), it's the middle fall that gives Gluggafoss its name. Known as the window falls (or Gluggafoss in Icelandic), the middle waterfall falls behind the cliff wall, and can be observed through windows that have developed in the cliff wall over time.
Super boring, informative part out, this was one of the more unique waterfalls I have had the pleasure to chase. Plus, we got lucky and had a break in the clouds and rain during our stop, creating a magical rainbow at the base of the falls 😍

DARCY WANDERS' ROUTE
I downloaded the navigation for Gluggafoss from AllTrails. We had originally planned to skip the upper falls, but made a last minute decision to conquer the hill. Unfortunately, there is no way to reach the upper falls as it sits on the opposite side of a ravine, but we still enjoyed the view and the surprising effort it took to reach. While this hike is short, the trail grade is very steep and a definite challenge when it is slick from the rain.
It's a short walk from the parking lot with some elevation gain and stairs to reach the lower and middle falls. If you can manage the stairs and some navigation around rocks, then I highly recommend following the trail to the base of the middle falls! 🤩
GETTING THERE
The easiest way to get to the Gluggafoss trailhead is to use the navigation system of your choice with your destination set as Gluggafoss. Parking information via the internet is mixed with many websites claiming parking is free; however, there is a massive parking payment sign with a QR code to make your parking payment. We had already downloaded the Parka App and set up our account, so with a couple quick clicks, we were on our way.
TO WANDER, OR NOT TO WANDER
Located off of Ring Road, but a short 19-minute drive from Seljalandsfoss, this three fall stunner offers a break from the Ring Road crowds and a visit to a magical window fall. It's short, it's steep, it's stunning, what more could you possibly need?
