Kvernufoss

Skógar, Southern Region, Iceland, 2024

As far as walk-behind waterfalls go, this one was meh. But, I wanted to chase all the waterfalls during this trip and Kvernufoss routinely came in on the top 10 list, so we chased it.

TRAIL DEETS

Length: 1 mile

Elevation Gain: 187 feet Max Elevation: 243 feet

Route Type: Out and Back

AllTrails Difficulty: Easy

DARCY WANDERS' ROUTE

I downloaded the navigation for Kvernufoss from AllTrails, but it is not necessary: it's short, 90% of the trail is wide and constructed from plastic traction pavers, and you can see your destination (Kvernufoss).

While this is not the most spectacular walk-behind falls, it was nice to get out of the car and stretch our legs. We pulled out of the Skógafoss parking lot as a decent "early morning" crowd was arriving and were thrilled to drive the quick 3 minutes to the Kvernufoss parking lot and find the trail to ourselves.

For me, the highlight of this trail was our quick stop at the Freyacafe (located across the parking lot). I'm still dreaming about the chai latte and apple strudel 😍

GETTING THERE

The easiest way to get to the Kvernufoss trailhead is to use the navigation system of your choice with your destination set as Kvernufoss. There is a small parking fee and zero pay kiosks, but there are a couple massive parking payment signs with a QR code to make your parking payment. We had already downloaded the Parka App and set up our account, so with a couple quick clicks, we were on our way.

TO WANDER, OR NOT TO WANDER

Located off of Ring Road and a stone's throw from Skógafoss, this Icelandic top-10 waterfall is the perfect leg-stretching break you didn't know you needed! Coming in at 1 mile and basically flat, this little trail is a quick pit-stop ending at a walk-behind waterfall.
