Skálakot Manor to Waterfall
Southern Region, Iceland, 2024
This gem of a trail is only a 14-minute drive from Seljalandsfoss, and one that I had tucked in my back pocket for a rainy day 😅 While we battled the weather and rain our entire time in Iceland, we had a surprise break in the storm while at Seljalandsfoss and decided to wander this trail. Honestly, we had no idea what to expect, I hadn't looked too closely at photos on AllTrails, so we were pleasantly surprised by the small canyon the trail walks above. We also enjoyed having the trail all to ourselves 🥰

DARCY WANDERS' ROUTE
I downloaded the navigation for Skálakot Manor to Waterfall from AllTrails. At the time of writing this post, this trail appears to be more of a local secret that is just starting to gain attention: the locals who reside in this small pull out off of Ring Road have created a few signs designating hiking parking and the start of the trail (I thought we were going to have to walk through someone's driveway and backyard). Once you find the trailhead, there is a clear trail to follow, however, about the last quarter to third mile stretch to the waterfall, the trail is often easily lost and unclear in several sections.
Reflecting back on this hike, I probably would have turned around when the clear trail ended. The waterfall that the AllTrails route leads to wasn't the most impressive and the scramble up to the falls wasn't the smartest thing to do in the rain 🫣
GETTING THERE
The easiest way to get to the Skálakot Manor to Waterfall trailhead is to use the navigation system of your choice with your destination set as Ásólfsskálakirkja (this is a church that is designated for hiking parking). Parking is free 🥳
TO WANDER, OR NOT TO WANDER
If you're looking to take a break from the crowds and soak in the beauty of the Icelandic countryside, then this is the hike for you! Conveniently located off of Ring Road and a short drive from Seljalandsfoss, this off-the-beaten-path trail is a tranquil little slice of Iceland.
